Your academic advisor is either a faculty member or a professional advisor specifically trained to facilitate an exploration of your long and short term goals, which may include academic, life and/or career goals. Your academic advisor is also a valuable resource in better understanding your academic progress, degree requirements and the specifics of your declared major. It is your responsibility to arrange meetings with your advisor, and you are required to meet with your advisor at least once each semester. Make use of your advisor by setting a series of meetings to discuss more complex challenges.

Each semester, there is a four-week advising/registration period in which faculty and professional advisors meet with students to prepare for the upcoming semester. In the fall, this period begins in mid-October and ends in mid-November, and in the spring, it takes place from mid-March to mid-April.
During this peak advising period, students have the opportunity to discuss academic and career opportunities with their advisors. The primary reason for the meeting is to discuss course options for the following semester(s). In addition, students might expect to discuss educational and career goals. Depending upon need, advisors can direct students to the appropriate resources on campus to find assistance. In addition to your advisor or advising center, there are numerous resources available to UNCG students, but some of the more common ones include the Career Services Center, which assists students with the job search and internship placement, the Learning Assistance Center, which provides tutoring and supplemental instruction in various subjects, and the Speaking Center or Writing Center, each provide support to build basic communication skills for success. Students should come prepared to the advising appointment. To assist with the preparation, students should consider the following steps:
- Consider short-term and long-term goals. What is it that you hope to accomplish now and in the future?
- Review academic history by accessing the online degree evaluation or degree audit. (Instructions on creating an online degree audit may be found by clicking here.... )
- Conduct a search on UNCGenie to identify possible course options for the following semester(s).
- Prepare questions about career and internship opportunities, study abroad, and student organizations
