What is your role in the advising process?

Advising @ UNCG In many ways, advisors have the easier part in the advising relationship; they get to ask questions. What are your goals? Are you getting the most out of your classes? What do you want from life? What changes might you make to reach your goal(s)? It may seem that your advisor is challenging you at times but bear in mind that challenge can be good. Answering tough questions leads to growth and when you can answer these questions honestly, you are getting a real education, not just a degree.

What is your role as a student?
Meet with your advisor regularly.
Be prepared when you meet with your advisor.
Be ready to discuss what you want from this college experience (and beyond).
Listen carefully and critically to the advice offered.
Decide which actions to take, make the most of your education!
Don't be afraid to ask questions, even tough questions.
Become knowledgeable about your college program and its policies/procedures
Be an active participant in this experience.
Ultimately, take responsibility for your actions and decisions.
Be open and trust that your advisor cares about your success.

At a minimum, students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least once each semester but we encourage you to seek out your advisor throughout the semester. This is the single most important piece of advice that we can offer. Students who build a mentoring relationship with an advisor are the students who are more likely to participate in discussion about career and life goals, internships, studying abroad, academic assistance, and other areas important to student success at UNCG. Additionally, students who attend their advising sessions and come prepared are often the students who can register on time and for the most appropriate courses according to major, ensuring that a timely graduation is an easily attainable goal.
