In many ways, advisors have the easier part in the advising relationship; they get to ask questions. What are your goals? Are you getting the most out of your classes? What do you want from life? What changes might you make to reach your goal(s)? It may seem that your advisor is challenging you at times but bear in mind that challenge can be good. Answering tough questions leads to growth and when you can answer these questions honestly, you are getting a real education, not just a degree. |
What is your role as a student? At a minimum, students are required to meet with their academic advisor at least once each semester but we encourage you to seek out your advisor throughout the semester. This is the single most important piece of advice that we can offer. Students who build a mentoring relationship with an advisor are the students who are more likely to participate in discussion about career and life goals, internships, studying abroad, academic assistance, and other areas important to student success at UNCG. Additionally, students who attend their advising sessions and come prepared are often the students who can register on time and for the most appropriate courses according to major, ensuring that a timely graduation is an easily attainable goal. |
